Highland Schottische by Robert Grieve Black begins in Barrow-in-Furness at the beginning of the 20th cenury. Donald Black lives with his family on the island of Walney and walks each day to the Vickers yard to build submarines.
Later in the book tragedy strikes as he loses a son at sea, sunk by  a submarine.
